The past two days I've been reading various news reports, like this one in the LA Times and this one from The Record in the Central Valley, about the supposed plan of Phil Angelides, (D) candidate for CA Governor for solving our prison overcrowding problem. Then I also read the press release issued by Mr. Angelides. I criticized our Governor about his position but, I can't see a whole lot there in his opponent's plan either except for more political talk with no real addressing the issues that keep our prisons full and keep offenders returning to prison at the highest rate of any state in the US.
We need to hear something from someone on sentencing reform, true education for inmates, real attempts to rehabilitate, serious solutions to inmate health care, etc. All we hear is about is spending more money for more prisons to house more inmates who will get released, return to our communities only to commit new crimes and go back to prison. Can't we prepare these men and women to live productive lives? Wouldn't that be a better use of our tax dollars?
